BMW is recalling more than 720,000 vehicles due to a problem with the water pump’s electrical connector that could cause a fire.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the recall includes some X1, X3 and X5 vehicles, as well as some other models.

According to the NHTSA report, the affected vehicles have water pumps with insufficient sealing and, over time, may be susceptible to fluid entering the electrical connector. There is a potential for a short circuit and, in rare cases, a fire.

Water pumps and connectors will be inspected and replaced as necessary. A guard will also be installed to divert any fluid that may fall on the pump from the positive crankcase ventilation system air inlet, the report said.

Vehicle owners are expected to receive a recall notice in October. They will be instructed to take their cars to an authorized BMW center for free repairs.
