NASA will undock the Boeing Starliner unmanned capsule no earlier than Sept. 6, the space agency said Thursday after completing a review.
Last week, the space agency said its two astronauts who flew to the International Space Station (ISS) on the Starliner in June will return to Earth on a SpaceX vehicle early next year.
Problems with Starliner’s propulsion system were deemed too risky for a crewed return after the capsule experienced a series of failures within the first 24 hours of its flight to the ISS.
Starliner’s journey back to Earth is expected to take about six hours from undocking to landing at White Sands Spaceport in New Mexico, NASA said in a blog post.
Ground teams will remotely guide the spacecraft through the maneuvers necessary for a safe undocking, reentry and parachute-assisted landing in the southwestern United States.
