Brazilians flock to alternative X blue sky after the Elon Musk-led platform was banned in the country. In a social media post, Bluesky said they are seeing “record activity.” This comes after a Brazilian Supreme Court judge ordered the suspension of X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, saying its owner refused to appoint a legal representative in the country.

Earlier this week, Judge Alexandre de Moraes warned Musk that X could be blocked in Brazil if it did not comply with his order to appoint a representative, and set a 24-hour deadline. The company has not had a representative in the country since earlier this month.

Meanwhile, Brazilians have switched to a popular X alternative: Bluesky. “Brazil, you are setting new historical activity records on Bluesky!” the company said on social media.

“There will almost certainly be some outages and performance issues. We’ve never seen traffic like this. Stay tuned!” said Bluesky developer Paul Frazee.

What is Bluesky?

Bluesky is a decentralized social media platform that emerged from an initiative by X but later became independent. Its primary mission is to create a more open and user-controlled online experience by developing the Authenticated Transfer Protocol (AT Protocol). This protocol allows different social networks to communicate, allowing users to manage their data and content preferences across multiple platforms. Unlike traditional social networks, Bluesky emphasizes user privacy, data ownership, and control over algorithms. The platform is seen as a potential alternative to centralized social networks, addressing growing concerns about privacy and content moderation.
