Hoteliers raise tourism policy with Rajiv Gandhi government ahead of investment summit | News

Hoteliers in Rajasthan have urged the state government to come up with the much-awaited tourism policy before the upcoming investment summit in December, saying it will help investors make informed decisions.

They said the policy will give investors an insight into the facilities and subsidies the government is implementing for the tourism sector.

The state will host the ‘Rising Rajasthan’ summit from December 9 to 11.

“During these summits, a major chunk of investments go into the tourism sector. In such a situation, the government should come up with the tourism policy before the summit. The benefit of this will be that the policy will be in front of investors and after going through it, they can easily invest in Rajasthan’s tourism sector,” said Surendra Singh Shahpura, a senior official of the Rajasthan Hotel Federation.

“We have already submitted numerous proposals to the government on tourism policy. We need the government to subsidise rural tourism, because it will create jobs in the villages. Only through rural tourism will it be possible to stop the migration of people from villages to cities,” he said.

Shahpura said the government will also have to pay attention to the infrastructure of monuments located in rural areas in this policy.

All hotel licensing processes, land conversion and construction planning processes should be simplified.

Federation of Hospitality and Tourism of Rajasthan (FHTR) president Kuldeep Singh Chandela said, “Our most important demand is that all budget hotels operating across the state, mainly in residential areas, be regularised.”

He said that promotion of tourism in Rajasthan should be done vigorously at international fairs and markets. The government should allocate a special budget for the maintenance of monuments and their upkeep should be taken up on priority basis. Attention should also be given to forests and ecologically sensitive areas.

Sanjay Kaushik, a travel agency owner, said tour operators should have a place in this policy. “The government should provide us some kind of facilities like easy financing and low road tax for commercial vehicles, among others, because tour operators are also an important part of the tourism sector,” said Kaushik.
