Viral News: A 26-year-old Briton died on Sunday after allegedly falling from the highest bridge in Spain, which he had climbed to create content on social networks, authorities reported this Monday.
The man was reportedly accompanied by a 24-year-old fellow Briton and fell while climbing the cable-stayed bridge in Talavera de la Reina, approximately 70 miles southwest of Madrid.
The identity of the victim is still unclear and he reportedly attempted to climb without any safety equipment.
Local authorities also cited heavy rain in Talavera before the accident, which may have made the bridge surface slippery, according to Spanish media reports.
“We have learned that they came to Talavera to climb the bridge and create content for social networks, which has resulted in this disastrous and sad outcome,” said Macarena Muñoz, Public Safety Councilor for the Talavera City Council.
The city’s Public Safety Councilor noted that climbing the bridge is strictly prohibited, even with repeated warnings to climb the bridge, describing it as something “that we have reiterated on many occasions cannot be done under any circumstances.”
Despite these warnings, incidents like this are becoming more common as people seek out such adventures in search of high-risk content for social media.
The city council confirmed that the man’s body was recovered from the scene and taken to a local funeral home.
The UK Foreign Office issued a statement saying: “We support the family of a British man who died in Spain and are in contact with local authorities.”
The bridge is a cable-stayed bridge with 152 metal cables that was inaugurated on October 17, 2011 and cost almost 74 million euros to build.
