I’m not going to lie, before this recipe came along, my favorite apple recipe was my apple cobbler or mine homemade apple pie recipeIt’s the perfect easy, laid-back fall dessert. But so is this! It’s got all the delicious things we want in a dessert: browned butter (so good!), soft pecans, warm old-fashioned oats, and delicious honey-flavored apples with all the spices of fall.

Ingredients you will need for this browned butter apple crumble

  1. Apples. I love using Honey Crisp apples because they are easy to find and absolutely delicious in a savory or sweet context.
  2. Walnuts. It’s no surprise, but walnuts are probably my favorite variety of nuts, especially in desserts. They’re soft and have a buttery texture.
  3. Spices. This is an apple dessert, so you know I had to use cinnamon and allspice. We’re not going overboard. It’s just the right amount.
  4. Butter. We add brown butter to the crunchy topping. This will give us delicious caramel notes.

Recipe Tip

  • Different nuts to use. If you don’t have nuts or don’t like them, you can replace them with pecans! It would almost have a buttery pecan flavor (similar to this) Butter and walnut cake.) What a delight!
  • Different varieties of apple. Any baking apple would work great, such as Granny Smith, Gala, Golden Delicious or Braeburn. If you use Granny Smith, I would pair it with another sweeter apple variety.

Frequently Asked Questions About Recipes

Can I make this apple crumble ahead of time?

I would say you can definitely make the topping ahead of time and store it in the fridge. The shortening will harden, but don’t worry, it will soften when it hits the oven. You can make the filling, but I would add the juice of 1/2 a lemon so the apples don’t brown.

How do I make this gluten-free apple crisp?

You can make it gluten-free by using gluten-free all-purpose flour instead of the wheat flour called for in the recipe. It should work great!

To prepare the crunchy topping:

  • Start by preheating the oven to 350ยบF and preparing the dry ingredients for the topping. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, oats, brown sugar, chopped nuts, and a pinch of salt.

  • Cut the butter into cubes. In a small saucepan over medium heat, add the cubed butter. Once it has melted, it will begin to foam and bubble a bit. Let it cook until you start to see light golden flecks forming. Stir and cook until it turns golden.

  • Pour the browned butter and any browned bits from the bottom of the pan over the dry ingredients and stir until everything is combined and slightly crumbly. Set aside.

To make the filling:

  • Peel, core, and cut the apples into 1/4″ slices and add to a bowl. Toss the apple slices with the brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, allspice, and salt until all the apple slices are evenly coated.

  • Spray a 2-quart baking dish (or an 8″ square baking dish works perfectly) with cooking spray. Add all of the apples and any juices and distribute evenly in the dish. Crumble the crispy topping and add it evenly over the top – it will seem like a lot, but that’s okay – it will cook down in the oven.

  • Place the baking dish on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet in case anything bubbles over, and bake in the preheated oven for 55 to 65 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.

  • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream.
