Call for young doctors to return to work

RG tax increased, security system of medical school and hospital, infrastructure is improving: Health Secretary

The correspondent, Kolkata Health Secretary Narayan Swaroop Nigam has appealed to the agitating doctors to return to work. Addressing a press conference held at the Health Department on Friday, he said that as per the directions of the Supreme Court, security measures have been tightened at the RGK Medical College. The safety of the hospital has been ensured. After the infrastructure was developed, the Health Secretary asked the agitating doctors to call off the strike by the junior doctors keeping in mind the interests of the patients. But the junior doctors are not ready to return to work.

Addressing a press conference on Friday, Health Secretary Narayan Swaroop Nigam said, “The incident of August 9 is very unfortunate. The state government has strongly criticised this incident. We are in favour of a proper investigation into this incident.” He said that as per the Calcutta High Court order of August 13, CBI has taken over the investigation into the incident. The Supreme Court has also taken cognizance of this case ex officio. The state government has already submitted the status report to the Supreme Court. As per the directions of the Supreme Court, CISF personnel have been deployed at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The state government has ensured the safety of doctors and other health workers.

The Health Secretary said that the mobile app “Ratrirer Sathi” has been launched for the safety of the people of the state. At the same time, adequate CCTV cameras have also been installed at RG Kar. Arrangements have been made for toilets. Additional security measures have been taken. Female security personnel are also being deployed at night, for which the Health Secretary has appealed to the junior doctors to return to work. Demanding that the agitating doctors withdraw the strike decision, the Health Secretary said, Junior doctors are the backbone of medical colleges and other government hospitals in the state. At the same time, there are many medical departments like cancer, cardiology and neurology in various government hospitals in the state, where currently only senior doctors are providing health services in the hospitals. Due to the lack of such doctors, patients are facing problems. Therefore, we request the agitating doctors to return to work immediately. In this context, the Health Secretary also said that on the request of the Supreme Court, the AIIMS doctors have returned to work. Junior doctors from these states should also return to work.

It may be noted that earlier on Wednesday, the junior doctors had gone to Swasthya Bhavan and held a meeting. In this meeting, the junior doctors demanded the removal of the hospital director, superintendent, additional superintendent and head of the chest medicine department. The Health Secretary said that as per their demands, the four officials have already been removed.
