The Canadian government has announced changes to its Postgraduate Work Permit (PGWP) for international studentswhich will be imposed from November 1, 2024 onwards.
What changes the PGWP eligibility criteria for working in Canada after graduation?
If you submit your study permit application from 1 November 2024, you must meet the new requirements that apply to your situation to be eligible to apply for a PGWP in Canada.
The following are the details regarding various conditions:
2. If you graduated from any other university program.
- Language requirement: You must prove your knowledge of the English or French language with a minimum level of CLB 7 in English o NCLC 7 in French in all 4 language areas.
- Field of Study Requirement: Must graduate in an eligible field of study.
3. If you graduated from a university program or any other program not mentioned above.
Field of study requirement
- If your degree program has a required field of study, you must graduate from a program tied to certain long-term missing occupations.
- The fields of study are divided into 5 large categories: agriculture and agri-food; health care; science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM); trade; and transportation.
Canada limits permits for foreign students and workers
Canada also announced in September that it would slash international student permits in 2025 and tighten rules on foreign workers to further reduce the number of temporary residents in the country, according to an AFP report.
The move comes after several recent rounds of restrictions intended to control the record levels of immigration that led Canada’s population to surpass 41 million earlier this year.
In 2025, Ottawa plans to issue 437,000 study permits to international students, up from 485,000 this year and more than 500,000 in 2023.
It is also imposing new limits on work permits for the spouses of some international students and foreign workers. And it will increase checks before issuing travel visas to curb a rise in fraudulent or rejected asylum applications.
