Carmakers are upping their style quotient: SUVs are being revamped as coupes to conquer a competitive market

MUMBAI: Automakers are in the process of tweaking design, shapes and body styles to inject freshness into SUVs, which after topping the sales charts for several years are now facing sluggish demand.

A body style that is gaining ground among several of them is the coupe, with Citroën and Tata Motors Mahindra & Mahindra is already launching SUVs with the distinctive swept-back roof design feature that has so far been found mainly on luxury vehicles. Mahindra & Mahindra is exploring a coupe version of the XUV7OO SUV and also in its electric vehicle lineup, while Volkswagen and Renault have coupe SUVs in their plans for India, people familiar with the matter said.

Luxury car manufacturers Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar Land Rover and Porsche Coupe SUVs are now on sale in India.

Buyers often prefer sleek SUVs that stand out among the usual boxy designs, industry executives said.

The coupe versions represent a fusion of style and versatility, appealing to consumers who want the robustness of an SUV with the elegant design of a coupe.

‘Attractive prices’
“SUV coupes are a growing subset, underlining the increasing demand for lifestyle vehicles that are sporty, high-performing and yet practical,” said Santosh Iyer, Managing Director and CEO, Mercedes-Benz India.

Tata Motors is entering the mid-size SUV segment, where it has not been present so far, with the coupe-styled Curvv, which offers buyers the option to choose between electric, petrol or diesel drivetrains. The mid-size SUV segment is the fastest-growing passenger vehicle segment and held a 16% share of the industry’s total volumes last fiscal. The launch price of Rs 17.49 lakh for the electric variant, “we are offering price parity on an EV with other similar mid-size SUVs on ICE (fossil fuel),” a spokesperson said. French carmaker Citroen launched the Basalt, its coupe SUV, earlier this month in India at a starting price of Rs 7.99 lakh, which its brand head for India, Shishir Mishra, called a “very attractive” price.

German luxury carmaker Audi is seeing a surge in demand for Sportback or coupe body styles for both the Q3 and Q8. “The Sportback body currently has a 25-30% share in its model range,” said Balbir Singh Dhillon, director, Audi India.
