‘Caught napping at wheels’: Cong slams govt over trade deficit with China | India News

Congress has been attacking the administration over the trade deficit with China and calling for immediate steps to address it.

The Congress on Saturday hit out at the Centre over the trade deficit with China and said that while other countries around the world had taken steps to restrict uncontrolled Chinese imports, “our government has been caught unawares”.

Congress general secretary in-charge of communications Jairam Ramesh said data revealed by the government in the Rajya Sabha shows that India’s trade deficit with China has increased by about 16 per cent in the last two years, from $73,306.2 million in FY22 to $85,079.03 million in FY24.

“Governments around the world are taking notice of China’s industrial overcapacity and its dumping of products abroad. However, unlike most governments that have taken proactive steps to restrict uncontrolled Chinese imports, our government has been asleep,” Ramesh said in a post on X.

“Our domestic industries are being decimated and shut down, unable to compete with the flood of cheap Chinese goods,” the Congress secretary general said.

“The Prime Minister’s public declaration of a clean sweep of China on June 19, 2020 has proved disastrous in more ways than one,” he said.
