Veteran Trinamool Congress MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy on Sunday demanded that the CBI conduct custodial interrogation of Kolkata Police Commissioner and former director of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in connection with its probe into the alleged rape and murder of a doctor.

“The CBI must act fairly. Custodial interrogation of the former director and commissioner of police is a must to find out who and why spread the suicide story,” the TMC Rajya Sabha MP wrote in a social media post.

The doctor’s parents said they were informed by phone on the morning of August 9 that their daughter had died by suicide at the hospital where she worked.

Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal said no police personnel called the parents to tell them their daughter had committed suicide.

Sandip Ghosh, who was the principal of the medical college when the crime took place, was questioned by the CBI for long hours on Friday and Saturday.

Roy also questioned the demolition work on the fourth floor of the government hospital, where the seminar hall where the crime took place was located, and asked who was sponsoring Sanjay Roy, the civic volunteer who was arrested in connection with the alleged rape and murder of the woman postgraduate student at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

“Why was a sniffer dog used after three days? If I am being asked hundreds of such questions, let them speak up,” the MP urged the central agency, which was handed over the probe by the Calcutta High Court from the Kolkata police on August 13.

TMC leader Kunal Ghosh opposed Roy’s demands, saying the police commissioner has diligently done all the needful since the crime was reported.

“His (Roy’s) protest against crime is right, but I am vehemently opposed to his demands,” Ghosh said.

The Congress party said it was commendable that Roy protested against alleged attempts to cover up the heinous crime.

“I appreciate Sukhendu Sekhar Roy for his stand despite being in the ruling party,” said state Congress spokesperson Saumya Aich Roy.

CPI(M) leader Sujan Chakraborty claimed that the Left party has been making the same demands as Roy for several days and said Roy, as a veteran leader, is able to “read what is on the wall”.
