CBI summons report for wrong social media post about victim

Kolkata Doctor Murder Case: The Calcutta High Court has asked the CBI to file a report by September 18 regarding the indecent social media post about the alleged rape and murder victim at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The court said that no person in the society will accept such bad comments. In the much-criticised post by the petitioner, it is seen that bad comments have been made along with the victim’s photograph on social media.

CBI should be instructed to investigate cyber crimes

The body of a junior doctor on duty at a government hospital was found in the hospital’s seminar room on August 9, causing outrage across the country. On the High Court’s orders, the CBI has been investigating the case since the second week of August. In the PIL, the petitioner sought that the CBI be directed to investigate cybercrime in the context of this unfortunate and barbaric incident.

The court ordered the report to be submitted by September 18.

The court asked Additional Solicitor General Ashok Kumar Chakraborty, appearing for the central agency, whether they could find a way to block such posts. Chief Justice TS Shivagananam-headed division bench directed the Deputy Director, CBI, Kolkata, to look into the petitioner’s complaint regarding such indecent posts on social media. When this PIL, along with other petitions related to the alleged rape and murder of the doctor, was again filed before the court on August 9, the court asked the Deputy Director, CBI or any other competent officer to file a report in this regard by September 18. It asked him to do so.

The CBI does not have a separate branch for investigation

The bench also included Justice Hiranmoy Bhattacharya. After the order was issued, Chakraborty told the court that the CBI does not have a separate branch to investigate such cyber crimes and the state police has a special unit to monitor such cases. She appealed to the court to also direct the cyber crime branch of the West Bengal government to file a separate report. The court said it will consider this request during the next hearing of the case.
