A team of senior Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officers arrived in Kolkata on Wednesday to probe the rape and murder of a woman doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in West Bengal. According to sources, a forensic team, along with CBI officials, will also rush to the crime spot to investigate the gruesome case that triggered a nationwide uproar led by doctors across the country.

The CBI team, which includes medical and forensic experts, will visit the seminar room of the hospital where the body of the junior doctor was found on August 9, they added.

The CBI took over the case following the Calcutta High Court’s order on Tuesday. The court asked the Kolkata Police to transfer the investigation to the central agency.

The agency has filed an FIR under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in New Delhi, a CBI source said.

“Today, our officers will search for the call details of the deceased woman and the people who were on duty that day. They may file the FIR in a local court,” another source from the central agency said.

The CBI may take Sanjay Roy, who was arrested by the Kolkata police in connection with the case, into custody during the day, he said.

CBI takes documents from police

On Tuesday evening, two CBI officers went to Tala police station in Kolkata and took away documents related to the Kolkata police’s investigation into the case.

“They have taken documents and papers related to the case. We will cooperate with them in every possible way,” the police officer said.

Asked when the arrested accused would be handed over to the central agency officials, the IPS officer said they were waiting for a communication from their side.
