Chana Masala, Dal Soup, Peda and more: PM Modi’s lunch menu hosted by Sultan of Brunei

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently met the Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah, on a historic state visit to the Southeast Asian nation. Following bilateral talks on PM Modi’s second day in Brunei, the Sultan hosted a special lunch for PM Modi at his residence, Istana Nurul Iman. The event took place on September 4, 2024. The Indian Embassy in Brunei has shared glimpses of the meal enjoyed by the dignitaries on X (formerly Twitter). The first course was avocado, rice cake with vegetables, cucumber, asparagus with pickled radish. This was followed by lentil soup with crispy omelette and broccoli.

The third course consisted of a quiche with vegetables, spinach, wild mushrooms with black truffle, pumpkin puree and peas. The presentation of the different elements of the dish was very deliberate. The skilful application of the puree next to the quiche evoked the tricolour flag of India. See the following photo:

For the main course, the menu included a selection of jeera rice, channa masala, vegetable kofta, bhindi tamatar and grilled lobster, Tasmanian salmon, prawns, scallops with barley and coconut risotto. For a sweet ending, the menu included three types of royal Indian mithai. Guests enjoyed mango and saffron peda, motichoor ladoo and surti ghari with pistachio for dessert. The delicacies were served on a beautiful plate with a maroon and gold design. See the photo below:
