Durg/Balodabazar: Congress MP Devendra Yadav was arrested on Saturday in connection with the June 10 violence in Chhattisgarh‘In Balodabazar town, during an agitation in the Satnami community, a police officer said.
Yadav accused the Indian People’s Party (BJP) government of involvement Congress Workers in the case of arson.
Yadav was arrested from his residence in Durg district and taken to Balodabazar, the district headquarters of Balodabazar-Bhatapara district, where he was arrested, Balodabazar Superintendent of Police Vijay Agrawal said.
Several Yadav supporters gathered outside his residence in Bhilai Nagar area of Durg and shouted slogans after news of the police action spread. Yadav, a young powerbroker in the party, is a second-term MP from the Bhilai Nagar constituency.
Yadav was arrested in connection with a case registered at Kotwali police station in the Balodabazar arson incident, Agrawal said.
The case was registered under sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups), 120B (criminal conspiracy), 147 (punishment for rioting), 186 (willfully obstructing public servant in discharge of his duties), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 307 (attempt to murder) and others of the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, 1984.
Yadav was produced before a local court which remanded him in judicial custody till August 20, Agrawal said.
According to sources, the police had summoned Yadav at least three times to take his statement, but he did not cooperate, following which he was arrested.
Police personnel from Balodabazar and their counterpart from Durg reached Yadav’s house around 7 am. As the news spread, Yadav’s supporters tried to protect the MP and shouted slogans. Police finally managed to take Yadav away around 5 pm, an official said.
Unidentified persons vandalised the ‘jaitkham’ or ‘victory pillar’, a sacred symbol revered by the Satnami community, near Amar Gufa at Giroudpuri Dham in Balodabazar-Bhatapara district on the night of May 15-16 this year, triggering protests in June.
On June 10, a mob set ablaze a government office building and over 150 vehicles in Balodabazar town during a protest called by Satnamis against alleged looting of the “Victory Pillar”, leading to the imposition of Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
Congress The leaders, including Yadav, had reportedly attended a public meeting during the rally held by the Satnamis at Dussehra Maidan.
Around 150 people, including members of the National Students Union of India (NSUI) and the Bhim Regiment, have been arrested in connection with the June 10 arson attack.
The influential Satnami community, founded by medieval social reformer Baba Guru Ghasidas, represents the largest scheduled caste group in the world. Chhattisgarh.

“The state government has been trying to involve Congress “Workers in the Balodabazar arson case. The government has taken action against me for raising my voice in defence of the youth of Satnami community and the innocent. I am not afraid of the government and will fight the legal battle,” he said in Bhilai.
Yadav claimed that he had appeared before the Balodabazar police in the past after being summoned.
Former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel called Yadav’s arrest a political vendetta and asked the police not to act under political pressure.
“The role of the government and the police in the entire incident is suspicious. No member of the Indian People’s Party (BJP) was questioned or arrested, even though the alleged role of his former deputy Sanam Jangde emerged in the incident,” Baghel alleged.
In a video of a Satnami community rally, Yadav is seen neither coming on stage nor waiting there for long. Devendra Yadav’s arrest is purely political and we oppose it, he said.
“We will take into consideration the legal suggestions and decide the future course of action accordingly,” Baghel added.
Yadav is also an accused in the cases filed by the Enforcement Directorate and the state’s Anti-Corruption Bureau/Economic Offences Wing in connection with an alleged coal tax scam uncovered when Congress was in power in Chhattisgarh.
