The absence of teachers at Rajnandgaon Higher Secondary School has hit the students hard. Students are worried about preparation for the next year. board examInstead of taking any action and appointing a teacher, the District Education Officer reprimanded the students and threatened them for raising the issue. One student burst into tears as he told the story of the District Education Officer’s (DEO) misconduct to the local media.

Students claim that the absence of teachers is affecting the education system. When students of the school met DEO complaining that there is no teacher for higher secondary classes in their school, he not only misbehaved with the students but threatened to send them to jail. The students reached DM’s office with the application on August 3. DM sent them to DEO, where the officer misbehaved and threatened them. A video of a crying student went viral on social media. The girl claims that DEO scolded them and asked “ye application wagarah likhna kaun sikhaya tumlogo ko” (Who taught you all to write the application?). Watch the viral video here.

The student told the media that he somehow studied and passed the 11th grade exam, but he is afraid to sit the 12th grade exam. In order to resolve the issue and get a teacher assigned to them, the students contacted the DEO, but the response was not satisfactory.

This is not the first time that teacher shortages have disrupted classes in Indian schools. The delay in filling teacher vacancies in public schools affects daily classes and the quality of education. In November 2023, Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains promised that by March no public school in the state will have a single teacher or no teachers at all.
