The central government will conduct a complete assessment of the damage suffered due to devastating floods in Andhra Pradesh districts and provide all assistance to the state government to help the affected people rebuild their lives again, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said on Thursday.

Chouhan, who is on a tour of the flood-hit districts of the state as well as those in Telangana, lauded the Chandrababu Naidu government for providing early relief to the flood-affected people and assured that the central government would not refrain from supporting the efforts of the state.

He also assured the farmers that the Centre would take care of all damage to their crops and provide adequate compensation.

In Delhi, the Union Finance Ministry has directed PSU insurance companies to quickly settle claims by organising special camps for those affected by heavy rains and floods in the two states.

Insurance companies have also been asked to widely publish the names and contact numbers of nodal officers whom policyholders can contact.

Meanwhile, an inter-ministerial team of the central government also began its visit to flood-affected districts in Andhra Pradesh on Thursday.

The team led by Sanjeev Kumar Jindal visited Vijayawada, the worst-affected area, to assess the losses and destruction, according to an official press release.

The central panel visited the State Emergency Operation Centre at the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) office in Tadepalli where they were briefed by officials.

Later, officials also visited the Prakasam Dam, which was recently hit by three large drifting vessels, damaging a concrete girder.

As flood waters began to recede at many places, the civic body workers of Vijayawada were busy in sanitation work and also restoring water supply.

Vijayawada Municipal Commissioner HM Dhyanachandra said people should refrain from drinking the restored municipal tap water at this time as it is not potable.

Chief Minister Naidu has also said that water supplied by the municipality should not be used at least for the first two days as its quality needs to be tested, considering its turbid nature due to the unprecedented deluge.

Meanwhile, drinking water is also being supplied to flood-affected areas through tankers and several people have been seen collecting it in containers. Around 200 tankers are supplying drinking water.

The municipal commissioner also said that flood waters had “largely receded” and 80 percent of the flood-affected areas were accessible, except for some neighbourhoods in and around the Nunna area.

“There is no further information that Budameru (water level) will rise… The irrigation department is also trying to bridge the Budameru gap,” he said, adding that civil supplies could start distributing provisions from Friday.

A resident of Ajit Singh Nagar, the worst-affected area, told PTI that many people returned to their homes as the flood water receded.
