Woakes has taken 127 wickets in 32 Test matches on home soil, but picked up just 36 wickets in 20 overseas matches.

His last overseas tour was in 2022 and he was criticised for his performances in England’s 4-0 thrashing in Australia during the 2021-22 Ashes.
England travel to Pakistan for a three-Test series in October, before playing three matches in New Zealand in December.
Since 21 August 2013, i.e. Chris Woakes’ debut in Test cricket, there are only 9 all-rounders who have managed to average 30+ with the bat and less than 30 with the ball in home conditions in red-ball cricket, batting and bowling for a minimum of 10 innings.

“I’ll be playing for England, which is where I was chosen. I wouldn’t rule myself out, for sure,” Woakes, who took 3-32 on the first day of England’s opening match against Sri Lanka on Wednesday, told reporters about the upcoming tours.
“The selectors will have their plans, but I certainly won’t turn down a tour if I’m selected.
“I haven’t played an away game for a while, but it could be good because it gives you a new perspective on things. I wouldn’t hesitate.”

Woakes also said he has worked hard on his batting, which could boost his chances of being selected.
“It’s an advantage, isn’t it? It’s something I’ve always worked on,” said the 35-year-old, who has a batting average of 27.76.
“I’ve worked very hard to make sure I’m able to do that.
“It’s an extra string to the bow that allows you to potentially be selected ahead of someone else who may not be able to fill that role.”
England are 214 runs behind Sri Lanka after the first day of the first Test.
