Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on Thursday said that Independence Day reminds all citizens of the duties they have to discharge towards each other and the nation. Addressing an event in New Delhi on the occasion of the 78th Independence Day, the Chief Justice said, “This is the day that reminds us of the duties we have to discharge towards each other and the nation to realise all the values of the constitution.”

Addressing the Independence Day celebrations at the Supreme Court, Chief Justice DY Chandrachud said that India chose the uncertainty of freedom in 1950, and what is happening in Bangladesh today is a stark reminder of how precious both these things are.

“In 1950, we chose the uncertainty of freedom. What is happening in Bangladesh today is a stark reminder of how precious freedom is to us… It is very easy to take freedom for granted, but it is important that we look back at the stories of the past to remind ourselves how precious freedom is,” he said.

Addressing the 13th constitution ceremony and foundation day of OP Jindal Global University in Delhi a few days ago, the CJI exhorted students to spot injustice in all its facets in the world around them. “The Constitution is a powerful tool to curb such disparities. It creates institutions and structures meant to protect against inequalities, apparent or invisible,” he said. “In that sense, it plays a horizontal role, insofar as it regulates inter-institutional relations; and a vertical role, insofar as it regulates the relationship between the State and the people. But that is not all.

“The Constitution does much more than that: it embeds these values in our social fabric,” Justice Chandrachud said.
