New Delhi: Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on Thursday stressed the importance of freedom and independence. He said India chose the uncertainty of freedom in 1950 and what is happening in Bangladesh today is a stark reminder of how valuable these two things are.
Addressing an event organized by the Supreme Court The Bar Council is celebrating Independence Day. Chief Justice Chandrachud said that this is the day that reminds us of the duties we have to discharge towards each other and towards the nation to realise all the values of the Constitution.
“This day we honour the commitment of those who live this life to make it better and those who work to make it better. We all talk about the Constitution in the context of the colonial era and what our country suffered. This morning I was reading a beautifully written piece by the famous Karnataka vocalist Chitra Sri Krishna and the title of the piece is Songs of Freedom. The idea of freedom is woven into the fabric of Indian poetry,” he said.
“In 1950 we chose the uncertainty of freedom, and what is happening today, for example in Bangladesh, is a stark reminder of how precious freedom is to us. It is very easy to take freedom for granted, but it is important to understand the stories of the past to remind us how important these things are,” the Chief Justice added.
The CJI’s comments came amid violence in Bangladesh, where more than 200 people have been killed in violence that began in early August.
Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal has launched an investigation against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and nine others on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity that took place from July 15 to August 5 during the mass student movement against her government.
The investigation was initiated following a request from the father of a ninth-grade student who was killed during the student movement against discrimination.
Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal investigation agency has launched investigations against Hasina, Awami League general secretary and former Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and several other prominent figures within the party.
The complainant’s lawyer, Gazi MH Tamim, confirmed on Thursday that the court has initiated the investigation, The Dhaka Tribune newspaper reported.
Student-led protests demanding reforms to government employment quotas evolved into a movement to overthrow the government in early August.
More than 230 people have been killed in Bangladesh in violence that erupted across the country following the fall of Hasina’s government on August 5, raising the death toll to 560 during the three-week violence.
Following Hasina’s resignation, an interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus was formed in the country, promising to undertake administrative and political reforms and hold those involved in the violence accountable.
