New Delhi:Days after the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari The Chief Minister has warned the Punjab government to cancel the National Highways project due to the deteriorating law and order situation. Mr. Man accused the National Highways Authority of India (National Institute of Health) due to the delay in land acquisition.
Regarding the attacks on NHAI staff in Punjab, Bhagwant Mann said the cases were due to causes attributable to the concessionaire/contractor, adding that the state police responded promptly. “Upon investigation, it was found that one incident was a result of excessive excavation of earth by the concessionaire/contractor of NHAI. The second incident was a result of non-payment of financial dues by the concessionaire/contractor to its subcontractor,” Mann said, in response to Gadkari’s letter.
In his letter, CM Mann said he had directed the state police to deploy patrolling teams to maintain law and order, stating that he will “personally engage” with the farmers to resolve the bottleneck.

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has warned the Punjab government to cancel the allotted infrastructure projects due to the “deteriorating” law and order situation in the state. Nitin Gadkari has written a letter to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann warning that eight major highway projects will be cancelled if the prevailing law and order situation in Punjab does not improve.
The letter comes in the wake of reports of violence and intimidation of National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) workers engaged in the ongoing construction of the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway. In the letter, Gadkari cited incidents of alleged attacks on engineers and contractors in major cities like Jalandhar and Ludhiana. He asked the state government to take strong action against the perpetrators to restore confidence in NHAI staff.
“I request the State Government to immediately take corrective measures, lodge complaints and take stern action against the perpetrators to prevent such incidents from recurring in future and restore the confidence of the NHAI officials and the staff of the concessionaires. It is pertinent to note that due to pending issues related to land acquisition and prevailing law and order conditions, the concessionaires have sought execution of contracts and lodged complaints against the NHAI,” Union Minister Gadkari said in his letter.
“If the situation does not improve, NHAI will have no option but to cancel/terminate another 8 severely affected projects with a total length of 293 km and cost of Rs 14,288 crore,” the letter read.
