Nanded: Congress MP Vasant Chavan passed away on Monday at a private hospital in Hyderabad after a prolonged illness, party sources said.
Chavan (69) passed away in hospital around 4am, according to sources. He was receiving treatment for kidney problems since last week.
He Congress The veteran had won the Nanded Lok Sabha seat this year despite his ill health and large defections, including that of former CM Ashok Chavan, who joined Indian People’s Party (BJP) before the polls.
Soon after the results of the Lok Sabha elections were announced, Vasant Chavan thanked Ashok Chavan for defecting to Indian People’s Party (BJP).
In the Lok Sabha elections, Vasant Chavan defeated the incumbent candidate Indian People’s Party (BJP) Pratap Patil Chikhalikar MP polled 59,442 votes, overcoming problems including a weakened party after Ashok Chavan defected to the BJP just before the election and his own personal health problems.
Born in Naigaon in Nanded district, Vasant Chavan was a member of the gram panchayat for a long time and later became a member of the zilla parishad in 1990 and 2002.
He was elected for the Maharashtra In 2002, he became a member of the Legislative Council and the State Legislative Assembly from the Naigaon Assembly seat. He served as an MP from 2009 to 2014.
He was also the Chairman of Nanded District Central Cooperative Bank from 2021 to 2023.
His last rites will be performed at Naigaon at 11 am, sources said.
