Cow smuggler Arif Khan was injured in an encounter with police and five others were arrested

Bhubaneswar: A cow smuggler was seriously injured in an encounter with the police at Kulbhakuni village under Harichandanpur police station in Keonjhar district on Saturday evening. The identity of the accused has been revealed as Arif Khan. The police seized two country-made weapons from the spot and five accused were reportedly arrested. During this operation, the police freed a total of 25 cows from the clutches of the smugglers. According to sources, the Keonjhar police had received information about cattle smuggling through the forest in Kulbhakuni village on Saturday evening. Subsequently, the police conducted a raid and stopped five vehicles carrying cattle. On seeing the police, the smugglers opened fire. Following which, in retaliation, Arif was shot in both his legs.

Keonjhar Additional Superintendent of Police Dilip Nayak said that during the raid, when the illegal cattle transportation mafia was moving towards Kaliyhata, a special squad stopped them at Pithagola village near Kadua village. During this process the mafia was chased and asked to stop but the accused started firing at the police. In self-defence, the police team retaliated to save themselves and in the process, Arif Khan of Samantpur village under Ghatgaon police station area received bullet injuries on both legs. He was first taken to Harichandanpur health centre and then to Keonjhar district main hospital. Following this, he was referred to SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack. According to the doctor, his condition is out of danger.

Police officers were also injured.

Two policemen were also injured in the encounter with the cow smugglers and were treated at CHC Harichandanpur. Two country-made firearms (small arms) have also been recovered from the accused. Two cases under various sections of the IPC, Arms Act and Cruelty to Animals Act have been registered at Harichandanpur and Pandapada police stations in the district.

25 cattle were rescued

Keonjhar Additional Superintendent of Police Dilip Nayak said that after receiving information from sources, the Harichandanpur police station personnel and a special squad conducted a raid to nab the mafia involved in illegal cattle transportation. The mafia was planning to take the cattle in the name of Kaliyhata. Four pickup trucks were seized in the raid. Five people have been arrested and a total of 25 cattle have been rescued.
