Cristiano Ronaldo scores his 900th career goal as Portugal beat Croatia 2-1

Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 900th career goal in Portugal’s Nations League match against Croatia on Thursday.

Ronaldo put his side 2-0 up at the Estadio da Luz in the 34th minute when he latched on to Nuno Mendes’ cross with a volley from close range, before collapsing to the ground in excitement at reaching another milestone.

The 39-year-old has already scored 131 international goals, 450 for Real Madrid, 145 for Manchester United, 101 for Juventus and 68 for his current club Al Nassr, as well as five for his first club Sporting Lisbon.

Argentine Lionel Messi, second on the all-time scoring list, has scored 859 goals in his career.

“It means a lot,” Ronaldo said after Portugal’s 2-1 win. “It was a milestone I had wanted to reach for a long time. I knew I would reach this figure, because as I continued to play, it would happen naturally.”

In celebration, Ronaldo put his hands to his face and fell to his knees.

“It was exciting because it is a milestone,” he said. “It seems like just another milestone, but only I and the people around me know how hard it is to work every day, to be physically and psychologically fit, to score 900 goals. It is a unique milestone in my career.”
