CSK CEO denies rumours of requesting BCCI to reinstate ‘uncapped player’ rule for MS Dhoni; ‘We were told…’

MS Dhoni’s participation in the upcoming IPL season is a hot topic at the moment as Thala earlier clarified that the tournament’s retention rule could play a major role in deciding whether he will continue to play. With a long time still ahead for IPL 2025 and the mega auctions, reports started surfacing that CSK had asked BCCI to bring back an old retention rule that would have allowed the franchise to retain Dhoni as a non-cap player. However, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan has clarified the matter by firmly stating that BCCI will decide on the rules and regulations.

What about the IPL’s ‘uncapped’ player retention rule?

Until 2021, the Bank of Canada International Trade Commission (BCCI) It allowed all franchises to retain experienced Indian or international cricketers as non-international players if they had not played an international match for 5 years or more. However, with the introduction of two new franchises in 2021, the BCCI decided to do away with this rule, but reports strongly suggest that the Indian cricket board will reinstate this rule for the 2025 IPL season.

It is noteworthy that CSK had retained Mrs Dhoni at a high price 12 crores during the last IPL mega auction, but if the uncapped player rule comes into play, the yellow team will be able to get Thala at a price of just 4 crore. With Dhoni no longer the batsman he once was, CSK is banking on the veteran for his cricketing acumen and his A reduction of Rs 8 crore in their portfolios would open up opportunities to buy new players.

CSK CEO denies rumours of calling for reinstatement of uncapped players rule:

Despite what the rumours suggest, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan has come out to firmly state that his franchise did not ask the BCCI to re-implement the uncapped player rule but the Indian cricket board has suggested that they might implement the old rule anyway.

In an interaction with The Times of India, Viswanathan said, “I have no idea about it. We have not requested for it. They (BCCI) have told us that the ‘uncapped player rule’ can be maintained, that’s all. They (BCCI) have not announced anything yet. The rules and regulations will be announced by the BCCI.”
