It is difficult to say who West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was protesting against in Kolkata on Friday. Her party leaders and workers were demanding death penalty for the culprits in the rape and murder case of a doctor. After all, Mamata Banerjee is the Chief Minister of the state and the state administration works under her orders. On Friday, the Calcutta High Court had termed the vandalism at the RG Kar Hospital as an “absolute failure of the state administration”. The Chief Justice asked what the police did when lumpen elements vandalised the hospital. Now people are asking Mamata Banerjee why she did not take action against the Kolkata police chief for failing to protect the doctors and the expensive equipment of the hospital.

Mamata Banerjee is blaming the “Left-BJP nexus” for the current agitation. I agree, there should be no politics in this matter. But Mamata needs to be reminded that it was her own party, the Trinamol Congress, that sent a delegation to Hathras, UP, when a Dalit girl was raped. India is a big country where different parties rule in the states. Whenever such heinous crimes happen, politicians do not talk about what happened in their state, they point the finger at states ruled by other parties. This is indicative of a mindset, where a politician says after a rape incident that “boys make mistakes.”

The second mindset is to try to trace the religion of the culprits. The third mindset reflects the attitude of “chalta hai”. The chilling reality is that we have not learnt anything from the Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case that took place in Delhi in 2012. Neither the mindset has changed, nor the system. Will the brutality perpetrated on the daughter of Kolkata at least wake up the political parties? Will they focus more on developing concrete methods to instil terror in the minds of the rapists and murderers, rather than pointing the finger at each other? Today, the rapists and murderers are fearless and moving around freely, while our daughters are trembling in fear. Let us wake up from our slumber before another brutal rape and murder takes place.
