Explosion at a chemical factory in Andhra Pradesh

The death toll rose to 17 on Thursday after a reactor explosion at a pharmaceutical company in the Atchutapuram Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Anakapalli, Andhra Pradesh.

Anakapalli district collector Vijaya Krishnan confirmed the deaths on Thursday.

The incident occurred after a 500-kilolitre condenser reactor exploded at a pharmaceutical company when around 200 workers were still working at the time.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident. The Chief Minister is expected to visit the family of the deceased and the injured on Thursday.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his condolences and said he was “pained” by the loss of lives in the accident. The Prime Minister has announced compensation of Rs 200,000 to the next of kin of the deceased, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.

“We mourn the loss of lives due to an accident at a factory in Anakapalle. Our deepest condolences to those who lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon. Compensation of Rs 200,000 will be given by PMNRF to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured will be given Rs 50,000,” the PMO said in a post on X.
