Deepinder Goyal: ETSA 2024 | You don’t have to be in Bengaluru to create a startup: Zomato’s Deepinder Goyal

Zomato co-founder and CEO Deepinder Goyalwho came to Bengaluru after seven long years of attending The Economic Times Startup Awards On Saturday, he said there is no need to come to Bengaluru to start new businesses.

During a fireside chat with ETtech editor Samidha Sharma, Goyal said, “The last time I was in Bengaluru was in 2017, seven years ago… You don’t have to come here to create a startup. That’s just what “People here think, but that’s not the case.”

The response drew laughter from Infosys chairman and co-founder Nandan Nilekani, who has in the past defended Bengaluru as the best city for entrepreneurs. Nilekani, also president of this year’s awards jury, said in an interview in 2021 that innovation is in the city’s blood and its culture attracts talent.

Goyal’s comment also reignites an old debate in the country about which city is the center of the start-up ecosystem. Unacademy CEO Gaurav Munjal started a conversation on

Bengaluru has been seen as the dominant force in India’s startup ecosystem, also called India’s Silicon Valley, and has given rise to the country’s top startups. However, New Delhi has gained ground in recent years, with a growing number of startups exploring public market listings. In addition to Zomato, based in New Delhi pay, Delhivery and Policybazaar are among the new-age companies listed on the stock exchanges in the last three years.


Goyal attended the 10th edition of the ET Startup Awards in Bengaluru on Saturday, where he spoke about Zomato’s journey so far, the changes after the IPO and shark tank appearance.
