Delhi: 3 people drowned and electrocuted in rain

New Delhi: Three people, including a teenager, were killed in separate rain-related incidents in the national capital in 24 hours since Thursday, officials said.

The incidents took place in Ranjeet Nagar, Chanakyapuri and Prem Nagar area.

In Ranjeet Nagar, west Delhi, a woman who ironed clothes for a living was electrocuted after stepping into a puddle of water.

“According to initial investigations, the victim, identified as Seema, 40, was electrocuted when the current passed through stagnant water on the street. She was taken to hospital, where doctors declared her dead,” a police officer said.

Seema is survived by her husband, a labourer, and two children. At the time of the incident, she was returning home with her sister, who was spared the same fate by walking a few steps away from her.

In central Delhi’s Chanakyapuri area, a 15-year-old boy drowned in rainwater collected on the side of a road near The British School while playing with his friends.

Police suspect the boy drowned when he became trapped under a car parked on the side of the road.

On Thursday, a 50-year-old man was electrocuted outside his home in north Delhi’s Rohini area, police said.

The victim, Sanjay, slipped in water outside his house in the Prem Nagar area and received an electric shock. He was declared dead at a hospital.

A video that surfaced online showed an MCD school, purportedly in Rohini, completely submerged under rainwater, with students seen climbing on desks. The MCD did not respond to the incident.

On Friday, major flooding was reported across Delhi and police received 15 complaints of traffic snags and 12 of flooding till evening.

The Department of Public Works said it received about 50 complaints about flooding, 25 of which it resolved.

Major waterlogging was reported at Dhaula Kuan underpass and Sanjay enclave in Mangolpuri.

Work is still going on at Dhaula Kuan and there is still a very small amount of water left which will be cleared soon, a PWD official said.
