The Delhi Environment Department will organise an ‘EV parade’ at Rajghat in early October, aimed at encouraging the purchase and use of electric vehicles (EVs) in the city.

Officials anticipate that more than 500 electric vehicles will participate in this event, and a registration link for interested owners will be announced shortly.

A senior official in the environment department said a tender has been invited for the event, estimated to cost Rs 576,000. Bids will be accepted till September 30 and the parade will be held within five days of the award of the tender.

“The main objective is to promote the use of electric vehicles in Delhi and create awareness about its benefits. We encourage as many electric vehicle owners as possible to join the parade,” said an official.

“The transition to electric vehicles will help reduce vehicular pollution in the capital,” the official said.

Environment Minister Gopal Rai, who recently resumed his post following the formation of a new cabinet, stressed that the government’s focus in the coming months will be on combating air pollution.

“The biggest challenge during winter is to reduce pollution levels. We have already held meetings with 33 departments to develop strategies on this issue,” Rai said.

“I will meet the Chief Secretary today to discuss further suggestions. The Winter Action Plan is ready and will be launched on September 25 instead of September 27 due to the Assembly session,” Rai said.

Rai also expressed confidence that with collaborative efforts, pollution levels in Delhi could be significantly reduced throughout the year, aiming to achieve similar results during the winter months.

In August 2020, the Delhi government introduced an electric vehicle policy that offers subsidies to its buyers and sets a target of one in four new vehicles registered in the capital being electric by 2024.
