Delhi Weather Update:Rains are expected on Independence Day, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hoist the national flag at the Red Fort. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a “yellow” alert, predicting light to moderate rain from Wednesday to Friday. According to the IMD forecast, skies will be generally cloudy in the coming days, with chances of light to moderate rain, thunderstorms or lightning. The department has warned that the rains could lead to minor traffic disruptions, increased risk of vehicle accidents and waterlogging in low-lying areas and on roads.
In its latest bulletin, the IMD has also predicted heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning and thunderstorms in several parts of India, particularly in the northwestern regions. A “yellow” alert means severely adverse weather conditions that could persist for several days, potentially worsening and disrupting daily activities. “Light to moderate, fairly widespread to widespread rainfall is very likely in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand; scattered to fairly widespread rainfall in Jammu-Kashmir, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan during the week,” the IMD bulletin stated.
Heavy rains in central India
Similarly, light to moderate, fairly widespread rainfall is expected in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Konkan, Goa and Gujarat region, while scattered to fairly widespread rainfall is expected in Vidarbha, Saurashtra and Kutch. Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada are expected to receive scattered, heavy rainfall throughout the week.
Light rains in southern India
Kerala, Lakshadweep and south interior Karnataka are expected to witness widespread light to moderate rainfall. On the other hand, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema, Telangana and coastal and north interior Karnataka are likely to witness isolated heavy rainfall.
