The exponential rise in franchise cricket competitions has begun to take its toll on New Zealand, with star opener Devon Conway opting for an occasional playing deal rather than a full contract. On the other hand, emerging white-ball batsman Finn Allen has turned down a central contract offered to him by New Zealand Cricket (NZC).

Conway has opted for an informal deal to play in the third edition of South Africa’s premier T20 competition, SA20. According to a report by ESPNcricinfo, Conway is expected to play for Joburg Super Kings in SA20 in January 2025.

Conway has been called up for the one-match Test match against Afghanistan and for a two-match Test series against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka. However, there is no certainty about his participation in the three-match Test series against India in India.

Conway thanked New Zealand Cricket for their support and said: “Playing for the BLACKCAPS remains the most important thing for me.”

“Firstly, I would like to thank New Zealand Cricket for their support throughout this process,” Conway said in a press release issued by New Zealand Cricket.

“The decision to step away from a contract as a centre-back is not one I have taken lightly, but I believe it is the best thing for me and my family at this time.

“Playing for the BLACKCAPS remains the pinnacle for me and I am extremely passionate about representing New Zealand and winning international cricket matches.

“I am excited to be part of the upcoming Test squads during an important period in the ICC World Test Championship cycle and look forward to participating in the ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan next February if selected,” he added.
