One of the most popular tourist places in Bikaner, Karni Mata Temple The temple is not only known for its architecture, but also for housing over 25,000 rats. The species that inhabit here are not caged, but are allowed to roam around the temple complex. These creatures can be seen roaming freely on the ground, often stepping over the feet of visitors. People from different parts of the country, and indeed the world, come to witness this spectacle. They are also offered milk, sweets and other offerings for the rats.
Of all of them, the white rats are considered especially sacred as they are believed to be the incarnations of Karni Mata and her children.
History
The origin of the Karni Mata Temple dates back to the life of Karni Mata, a distinguished woman of the Charan caste who lived in Rajasthan between the 14th and 16th centuries. She is considered an incarnation of Durga, the Hindu goddess of power and victory. Karni Mata is also believed to have performed numerous miracles, including the resurrection of her stepson, Laxman.
According to legends, Karni Mata implored Yama, the god of death, to bring Laxman back to life. Although she was reluctant at first, Yama was swayed by her unwavering devotion. It was then that Yama reincarnated Laxman and the other followers of the Charan clan as rats. This miraculous episode cemented Karni Mata’s divine reputation.
Temple architecture
Karni Mata Temple was built in the early 20th century by Maharaja Ganga Singh of Bikaner. The entire structure of the temple is built in marble and its architectural style resembles the Mughal style. The solid silver doors that form the entrance enclosure add to the charm of the attractive marble façade. The idol of Karni Mata of Bikaner is housed within the inner sanctum of the temple, which happens to be a 75 cm tall statue. The idol of the goddess is accompanied by that of her sisters on either side.
Important rituals
One of the regular activities at the Karni Mata temple is the making of offerings of Mangla-ki-Arti and bhog by the Charan priests. Devotees visiting the temple also make various offerings to the Goddess and rats. These offerings are generally classified into two types: Dwar-bhent (attributed to priests and temple workers) and Kalash-bhent (used for the maintenance of the temple).
The temple is also known for its bi-annual event. The time when these fairs are celebrated is during the two Navratras:
- Between March and April, from ChaitraShuklaEkam to ChaitraShuklaDashami
- Between September and October, from AshwinShukla to AshwinShuklaDashami
