Farmers’ association FAIFA said on Wednesday that government initiatives for digital revolution in agriculture will go a long way in stemming the exodus of youth from farming.

The Federation of All India Farmers’ Associations (FAIFA), which claims to represent farmers and agricultural labourers of commercial crops in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Gujarat, said the seven newly announced schemes totalling Rs 14,000 crore will play a key role in stemming the movement of youth from rural to urban areas and from agriculture to other professions.

“These new schemes are not limited to technological integration. They will help alleviate the agrarian distress caused by climatic variations and market uncertainties that have made farming unprofitable for our youth,” FAIFA President Javare Gowda said in a statement.

These schemes are likely to create new jobs, and the demand and creation of different skill sets will open up more opportunities for the youth of rural India in the future, FAIFA said.

Moreover, young people, sensing greater opportunities, will not feel the desperation to move to cities and this will also reduce the current high pressure on cities, he added.

“In fact, reverse migration could occur and we could see a more balanced urban-rural development,” the farmers’ organisation added.

FAIFA said the Digital Agriculture Mission (DAM), a key element of which is the development of an “agricultural stack” encompassing a farmers’ register, a village land map register and a register of crops sown, will act as a comprehensive database, maintaining detailed records on farmers, land use and cropping patterns.

“The digital revolution in agriculture will be a major disruptor as it has the potential to generate millions of jobs in both core and allied fields,” said FAIFA Secretary General Murali Babu.

This digitalisation will not only infuse vitality into the sector but will ensure that it remains India’s largest employer, he added.
