‘DMK doesn’t like the national flag’: Annamalai’s big criticism ahead of Independence Day

Tamil Nadu BJP president Annamalai during campaign

Chennai: Tamil Nadu BJP President K Anamalai On Sunday, state police refused permission to hold tricolour motorcycle rallies and launched a scathing attack on the ruling. DMKAnnamalai alleged that the party has shown that it does not like the national flag.

Annamalai referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign while explaining the BJP’s plan to hold ‘Tiranga Yatras’ (tricolour marches) across the country. The Tamil Nadu BJP unit had planned a rally in Tiranga but was denied permission by the police, Annamalai said.

Annamalai, who spoke out against the denial of permission, said no party flags will be unfurled during the rally and only the national tricolour will be used. “There will be no BJP flag and everyone is welcome; there will be vehicles and there will be a national flag. This is the tricolour march and it is aimed at creating (better) awareness among people and seeing the national flag flying in every house,” Annamalai said.

“It is a big surprise that it is happening only in Tamil Nadu… the national flag itself is a problem for DMK people… see how they are showing that they do not like the national flag… by denying permission for the vehicle rally, they have once again shown their anger,” Annamalai said. “What is the problem of law and order when one carries the national flag?” she asked.

Annamalai further said that in Coimbatore, officials had sought permission from the police authorities to take out the tricolour march. The BJP workers claimed that they would take out the rally only on the specified route and on the date and time fixed by the police. Even then, they were denied permission.

Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president K Selvaperunthagai has also asked his party functionaries to take out tricolour marches on two-wheelers and through padayatras. Ordering his party workers to take out yatras, the Congress chief lashed out at the BJP for what he described as an attempt to “appropriate” the national flag by taking out Tiranga yatras.

Selvaperunthagai said that from August 12 to 15, district Congress committee presidents should organise “tricolour motorcycle rallies” in their respective district headquarters cities.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed to citizens to hoist the national flag at their homes as part of the party’s ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign on the occasion of the 78th Independence Day on August 15. On the 112th ‘Mann Ki Baat’ on July 28, PM Modi asked all Indians to take part in the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign to celebrate Independence Day.
