In response to growing concerns about dark patterns, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs has issued guidelines outlining 13 specific practices that businesses should avoid. These guidelines address issues ranging from manipulation of user privacy to deceptive pricing practices. Violations of these guidelines could lead to legal action under the Consumer Protection Act 2019.

To help consumers navigate this complicated landscape, here are the top five dark patterns to watch for:

  1. Privacy deception: This occurs when apps trick users into sharing more personal data than necessary. For example, a lending app may request access to your camera or photo gallery, even though these features have nothing to do with its primary purpose.
  2. Stealth basket: In this scenario, unwanted items are added to your shopping cart without your consent, often just before you check out. This tactic can unexpectedly increase your total bill, leading to unwanted surprises.
  3. False urgency: Many e-commerce platforms employ tactics like limited-time offers that pressure users into making impulse purchases without enough time to reflect. This urgency can cloud judgment and lead to regrettable purchasing decisions.
  4. Bait and switch: This pattern occurs when users click on a link expecting to access one type of content, only to be redirected to an irrelevant ad or page. These deceptive practices can create confusion and dissatisfaction among users.
  5. Subscription trap: Users may unknowingly sign up for recurring services that may be difficult to cancel. Many find themselves trapped in a cycle of automatic payments, causing frustration and financial loss.
