Doctors’ protest continues for 21st day

Murder of a doctor in Kolkata: Rallies and demonstrations will be held at many places in Kolkata on Thursday against the alleged rape and murder of a doctor at the RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata. Various political parties and numerous social organisations will take to the streets during the day to register their protest. Union Minister Sukant Majumdar said that despite the police’s efforts to stop the BJP agitation, the party will hold a protest at the Esplanade area in central Kolkata on Thursday.

BJP state unit president Majumdar said the BJP has demanded Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s resignation for “failing to take the investigation in the right direction and for her continued efforts to protect the main culprits” in the incident of alleged rape and subsequent murder of a post-graduate student and a junior doctor. The protest will be held at the designated venue as per the schedule, but Mamata Banerjee and the Kolkata Police Commissioner will have to answer a lot of questions.

Adhir Chaudhary will take to the streets demanding justice

State Congress Committee president and former MP Adhir Choudhary will lead the party’s rally from College Square to Shyambazar in the northern part, demanding justice for the deceased doctor. An organisation called ‘Pather Daavi’ has registered a protest against the atrocities committed against women. The rally will be held at various venues with activists, students and professionals working for women’s rights.

Meanwhile, the strike by junior doctors in government hospitals in West Bengal continued on Thursday for 21 days. The doctors have refused to heed Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s call to return to duty. A protesting doctor said, “We will continue our protest till the main culprits of this heinous crime are arrested. The protesting doctors have also demanded elections in colleges, ensuring participation of junior doctors and students in all committees that take decisions on medical facilities and safety measures at workplaces.
