Domestic markets lost early gains amid foreign capital withdrawal

Internal markets: Major stock indices began trading higher on Monday but soon gave up early gains amid continued foreign capital outflows.

BSE Sensex rose 545.27 points to 81,770.02 in early trade. NSE Nifty stood at 24,978.30 points with a gain of 124.25 points.

However, soon both indices were trapped in profit booking and started trading at a loss. Sensex was trading 136.52 points lower at 81,060.86 points and Nifty was trading 100.70 points lower at 24,753.35 points.

Among the 30 companies listed on Sensex, shares of Titan, HDFC Bank, Asian Paints, Axis Bank, Tata Steel and HCL Technologies gained the most. HDFC Bank shares rose about three percent.

Shares of Kotak Mahindra Bank, Bharti Airtel, IndusInd Bank, Mahindra & Mahindra and NTPC fell. Shares of Kotak Mahindra Bank fell over five per cent.

In Asian markets, South Korea’s Kospi, Japan’s Nikkei 225 and China’s Shanghai Composite posted gains, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng posted gains.

US markets closed on a positive note on Friday.

International standard Brent crude oil settled at $73.38 per barrel with a gain of 0.44 percent.

According to stock market data, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were sellers on Friday and sold shares worth a net Rs 5,485.70 crore. While domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought shares worth Rs 5,214.83 crore.
