Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s campaign announced on Saturday that some of its internal communications had been hacked, accusing the Iranian government. However, the accusation was made without providing direct evidence, instead citing Trump’s historically tense relations with Iran.

This announcement came after Politico revealed that it had been receiving emails from an anonymous source since July. The emails purportedly contained authentic documents from the Trump campaign, including a report on potential vulnerabilities by his running mate, JD Vance.

“These documents were illegally obtained from foreign sources hostile to the United States, with the intent to interfere in the 2024 election and sow chaos throughout our democratic process,” Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said.

Microsoft claims Iran hacks US election

It should be noted that the Trump campaign’s statement referenced a recently published report by Microsoft researchers, which claimed that hackers linked to the Iranian government had attempted to breach the account of a “senior official” of a US presidential campaign in June. According to the report, the hackers first compromised the account of a former political adviser and then used it to attack the official. No specific details about the identities of the targets were revealed.

Additionally, while Microsoft did not provide further information about the hackers, Iran’s mission to the UN in New York on the tech giant’s allegations said its cyber capabilities are “defensive and proportional to the threats it faces” and asserted that Iran has no intention of launching cyberattacks.

“The US presidential election is an internal matter in which Iran does not interfere,” Iran’s mission to the UN said.

‘Tensions between the United States and Iran are increasing’

It is important to note that tensions continue to swirl around Trump and Iran, as during his first administration (Trump’s), the United States assassinated Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani in 2020 and withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal.

“Iranians know that President Trump will stop his reign of terror just as he did during his first four years in the White House,” Cheung said.
