Former Pakistani star Ali simple feels that Pakistan’s assistant coach, Azhar MahmoodHe showed disrespect towards the team by wearing his PAK cap backwards during the press conference for the first match of the Test series against Bangladesh. He has asked the former cricketer-turned-coach to avoid such behaviour in the future. Mahmood was part of the technical team of the England national team and also holds a British passport.
On his YouTube channel, Basit expressed his displeasure with Mahmood’s disrespect towards Pakistan’s cap emblem. He claimed that such behaviour would have been more acceptable if it was carried out by a coach from another country.
”As a Pakistani, I did not like what Azhar Mahmood did. You have served Pakistan. I would not have said anything if any Australian had done such a thing. You are wearing the Pakistan cap backwards at the press conference, please do not do such things. Don’t you like the star on the Pakistan cap? The country has given so much. You may have a British passport, but please do not repeat this,” he said.
The Men in Green scored a total of 448/6 after opting to bat first in the ongoing Rawalpindi Test. Mohammad Rizwan and Saud Shakeel led the batting effort, with scores of 171* and 141, respectively. In reply, the Bangladesh batsmen performed admirably and were eventually dismissed for 565. Veteran wicket-keeper batsman Mushfiqur Rahim was the standout performer with an impressive innings of 191 runs. At the time of writing, Pakistan were at 104/5 in their second innings play.
Azhar Mahmood said he was baffled by the unexpected behaviour of the Rawalpindi pitch. He also supported the team management’s decision to deploy an attack based entirely on pace bowling.
”The reason we didn’t play a fast bowler was that there was grass on the pitch and we thought it would favour the fast bowlers. We were hoping that would be the case. But the three hours that the pitch was in the sun before the match started on the first day may have made a difference. The wicket dried out – we didn’t think it would dry out so quickly – and that made the game different,” Azhar told reporters.
