Children are easily attracted by seeing puppets or such things. This time, puppet-like pavilions and statues of gods and goddesses are being constructed in the Sagarbhanga area of ​​Durgapur. It will be a centre of attraction for both children and adults.

Theme of the puja event ‘Putulbari’

This year, the Gopinathpur Sarvajanin Durga Puja Committee located in Sagarbhanga is constructing an 80-foot ‘Putul Bari’ (puppet pavilion) to attract the attention of visitors. Where along with the idol of Maa Durga, idols of Lakshmi, Ganesh, Karthik and Saraswati are being made in the form of puppets. The statues are being made by artists from Krishnanagar. Puja Committee chairman Atanu Pal and secretary Arijit Pal said that Sagarbhanga is an ancient village. There used to be a landlord named Gopinath Chattopadhyay here.

Know how Durgapur got its name

This town was named Durgapur after the name of Gopinath’s son Durgacharan Chattopadhyay. Gopinath Chattopadhyay has a significant contribution in the history of Durgapur. Earlier, Durga Puja was held only in the house of Zamindar Chattopadhyay, people from all classes and castes used to enthusiastically participate in the puja. Keeping in view the development of the village and the desires of the people, this home puja was transformed into a public Durga Puja 37 years ago.

Each year a pavilion is built on a unique theme.

Vice President Mahadev Pal and Suranjan Pramanik said that every year new and unique themes make headlines. Three years ago, the pavilion built on the theme of ‘bees’ became very popular. Last year, the pavilion built on the model of the ‘Royal Fan of Rajasthan’ enthralled the spectators. This year the theme of the puja is meant to entertain children. This will be very interesting not only for children but for people of all age groups. This time around 15 models will be made by coating clay on wood. In which there will be an idol of Maa Durga. The mandap is decorated with various instruments including hogla, bamboo, leaves and earthen pots.

Women play vermilion on Ashtami day

The pavilion and the statue are expected to attract the crowd this time too. The organiser of the puja, Varun Chattopadhyay, said that this year the puja will be inaugurated on the day of Panchami. The speciality of the puja is Kumari puja. Every day, around 100 women play vermilion on the day of Ashtami along with cultural programmes. Along with this, bhog is also distributed.
