Durga Puja: Authorities at a correctional facility in West Bengal have revamped the menu to serve mutton biryani, ‘Basanti Pulao’ and several other Bengali dishes to inmates during Durga Puja. The official said the modified lunch and dinner list for convicted and undertrial prisoners will be effective from Shashthi (October 9) to Dashami (October 12).

He said the dishes provided to prisoners include ‘Macheer Matha Diye Pui Shaak’ (portion of fish head and Malabar spinach), ‘Macheer Matha Diye Dal’ (dal with fish head), ‘Luchi-Cholar’ (puri and) . Bengali chana dal), ‘payesh’ (Bengali porridge), chicken curry, mutton biryani along with ‘raita’ and ‘basanti pulao’ (yellow pulao).

The official said that respecting the religious sentiments of the prisoners, non-vegetarian food will not be served to everyone and the prisoners will be asked to choose the food themselves.
Former state ministers Partha Chatterjee and Jyoti Priya Mallick and former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital Sandeep Ghosh are currently lodged in the Presidency Jail, one of the reform schools in the city. Another official said a total of 26,994 men and 1,778 women are housed in 59 correctional facilities in the state.
He said this menu change will be implemented in all correctional homes during the holiday season.
