A recent study published in the journal Nutrients suggests that consuming eggs It can help prevent cognitive impairmentespecially in older women. The study looked at 890 adults over the age of 55, 357 men and 533 women, between 1988 and 1991. Participants were asked about their egg consumption habits via a food frequency questionnaire and their cognitive abilities were assessed during two separate visits, four to five years apart. Cognitive testing included assessments of language, memory, attention, recall, and mental flexibility.

The results indicated that men tended to eat more eggs than women: some consumed eggs between two and four times per week, while others did so more than five times per week. Women, on the other hand, ate eggs sparingly, between one and three times per month, or not at all. Despite this difference in egg consumption, the study found that women who ate eggs showed a slower rate of cognitive decline, especially in their semantic memory.

The researchers stressed that while egg consumption was associated with better cognitive outcomes in women, there were no claims that eggs directly improved brain healthHowever, the study confirmed that eating eggs does not negatively affect cognitive abilities and that regular consumption could play a role in maintaining mental acuity. The study therefore recommends incorporating eggs into the diet as a potential way to support brain function at a given age.
