Asteroid 2024 JV33 resembled a “peanut” – “with two rounded lobes, one larger than the other,” showed a series of images captured by the Goldstone Solar System Radar near Barstow, California, on August 18, 2024.
Asteroid 2024 JV33 had safely passed Earth at a distance of 2.8 million miles (4.6 million kilometers) in August. A near-Earth asteroid reached its closest point towards Earth on August 19.
On National Peanut Day, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) released photographs and videos of asteroid 2024 JV33. These images were captured when the asteroid was at a distance of approximately 12 times the distance between the Moon and the Earth.
The asteroid was discovered by the NASA-funded Catalina Sky Survey in Tucson, Arizona, on May 4. According to NASA, “…the shape of the near-Earth asteroid It looks like a peanut, with two rounded lobes, one larger than the other.“
“Scientists used radar images “Asteroid 2024 JV33 is about 1,000 feet (300 meters) long and about twice as wide as it is. Asteroid 2024 JV33 orbits once every seven hours,” NASA said.
In addition, asteroid 2024 JV33 has an elongated orbit similar to that of many comets “that are strongly influenced by Jupiter’s gravity.”
“While no cometary-like activity has been observed, there is a possibility that the asteroid is a dormant cometary nucleus,” NASA said.
Asteroid 2024 JV33 has been classified as potentially hazardous, but does not pose a risk to Earth in the foreseeable future.
