Elderly man assaulted on train in Nashik, Maharashtra, on suspicion of transporting beef

Bombay: An elderly man was allegedly assaulted by his fellow passengers on an express train. train near Igatpuri in Maharashtra Nashik district under suspicion of carrying beefhe Government Railway Police (GRP) said on Saturday.

The GRP has launched an investigation after a video of the alleged incident, which took place earlier this week, surfaced on social media, an official said.

The video shows a dozen people attacking a man and verbally abusing him on a train.

According to the GRP, the victim, Haji Ashraf Munyar, a resident of Jalgaon district, was travelling to his daughter’s home in Kalyan when he was allegedly beaten up by his fellow passengers near Igatpuri on suspicion of transporting beef, PTI reported.

“We have taken cognisance of the video and identified the victim. We have also identified some of the persons involved in the attack and an investigation is underway,” the official was quoted as saying by PTI.

The Railway Commissioner has reportedly confirmed the incident and lodged a First Information Report (FIR). The railway police are currently searching for the passengers involved in the assault.

Following the video going viral, the Government Railway Police (GRP) contacted the elderly victim, who had initially hesitated to lodge a complaint. The police have identified two suspects from Dhule and have sent a team to the area to trace them.
