Elections to gram panchayats in Punjab were held on Tuesday amid tight security, officials here said.
They said voting for the posts of ‘sarpanch’ and ‘panch’ through polls began at 8 am and would continue till 4 pm.

After voting, votes will be counted at polling stations, officials said.
For the elections there are 19,110 polling stations, 1,187 of them marked as hypersensitive. There are 13,225 gram panchayats in the state.
According to an official, 9,398 gram panchayats will elect ‘sarpanch’.
Officials said 3,798 candidates for the post of ‘Sarpanch’ have already been elected unopposed.
In the morning, elderly people, women and youth were seen queuing in front of many polling stations.
The elections are being held without symbols of political parties as a result of the Punjab Panchayati Raj (Amendment) Bill, 2024, passed by the Vidhan Sabha last month.
There are a total of 1.33 million registered voters for this election.
There are 25,588 candidates for sarpanch posts and 80,598 candidates are in the fray for panch posts, officials said.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Monday dismissed a slew of petitions filed against the panchayat polls on various grounds, including a challenge to demarcation and delimitation of wards, complaints over electoral symbols, an extension of time for nominations and rejection of nomination papers.
