The advisory body said it was “increasingly concerned about significant reductions in online trust and security capabilities for certain platforms, and a perceived decline in the priority of the issue, negatively impacting the ability of companies to moderate extremist content online.” The Sunday Times said Musk had allowed banned extremists back onto X, allowed anyone to pay for a check mark, and sacked a large portion of his content moderation team, as part of the billionaire’s strategy to turn X into a “free speech” platform.

GIFCT was set up in 2017 under pressure from the US and European governments. The Sunday Times claimed that X, a founding member of the organisation, was not honouring his full financial contribution to the anti-rebellion organisation.
