Elon Musk Responds To EU’s Hate Speech Warning With A Tropic Thunder Meme

KEY POINTS

  • EU Commissioner Thierry Breton has warned Elon Musk about complying with the Digital Services Act (DSA) in light of Musk’s planned interview with Donald Trump on X.
  • Musk’s defiant response included an X-rated meme, showing his resistance to Breton’s warning.
  • The DSA enforces strict content moderation guidelines and the European Commission will monitor Musk’s compliance with these rules.

Elon Musk Musk received a warning letter from the European Union about his upcoming interview with former President Donald Trump. In response to Breton’s warning, Musk posted a meme on X on Monday afternoon. The meme included the message to “take a big step back,” reflecting Musk’s defiant stance. This response followed a previous public spat between Musk and Breton. In July, Breton criticized X’s blue checkmark system, claiming it misled users, which he claimed was a violation of the DSA.

The letter, sent by EU Internal Market and Services Commissioner Thierry Breton, addressed concerns about compliance with the Digital Services Act (DSA).

Breton wrote to Musk on Monday to ask him to comply with EU laws on hate speech and misinformation online. The DSA enforces strict moderation guidelines for content from sites with a substantial user base in Europe.

On Monday evening, Musk and Trump are scheduled to hold a “live conversation” on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. Musk urged users to submit questions ahead of the event. Trump also used posts promoting the interview to reactivate his X account.

Breton stressed that Musk, as owner of X, is responsible for ensuring that the platform complies with DSA rules. He stressed that because of his large following, Musk’s DSA obligations extend to all users and materials, including himself. Breton said the European Commission will be vigilant about any violations and will even take temporary measures to protect EU citizens from harm if necessary.
