Alcon, which owns the copyright to Blade Runner 2049, denied the request through its legal and licensing departments over concerns it could be seen as an affiliation with Musk and Tesla.
The study behind sword hunter 2049 has demanded tesla, Elon Muskand Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) for claims of copyright infringement. According to the complaint, Tesla is accused of having used an AI image generator to create images that closely resembled promotional art for the “We Robot” presentation.
The problem began when WBD and Tesla asked event organizers for permission to use some of the film’s footage just hours before the event was set to take place on October 10 on the Warner Bros. lot in California.
Alcon, which owns the copyright to Blade Runner 2049, denied the request through its legal and licensing departments due to concerns that it could be seen as an affiliation with Musk and Tesla, as the behavior and public persona of the latter had been controversial and volatile. However, Tesla went ahead and fed footage from the film into an AI generator to produce a “slightly stylized fake screen” that became the center of the event.
During the presentation he specifically mentioned science fiction visions of the future, the Blade Runner franchise, and a live-streamed image of a person in a dust jacket in front of a dystopian cityscape, quite similar to that of the aesthetics of cinema. Alcon says this is an intentional effort to capitalize on its intellectual property without permission, thus committing an act of copyright infringement.
The complaint also draws attention to broader issues of agreements that may have existed between Tesla and WBD that would have allowed Tesla to make use of Warner Bros. facilities, perhaps including promotional tie-ins with Warner Bros. movies and shows in the Warner Bros. catalog. study that were associated with Tesla’s Cybercab. Alcon claims to have not been notified of these agreements, which motivated its legal action.
Alcon has not disclosed the exact monetary damages it wants, but claims that Musk, Tesla and WBD knew and abetted the unlicensed use of images from Blade Runner 2049, in violation of copyright. This case may have significant implications for AI-generated content and its potential intellectual property infringement.
