The Emmy Awards On Sunday, the historical epic Shogun — a tale of warring dynasties in feudal Japan — premiered in Los Angeles and is poised to break records at the television equivalent of the Oscars. “We haven’t even given out a single award tonight, and yet Shogun has already made Emmy history,” said Daniel Levy, co-host with his father Eugene, in his opening segment. The Shogun Dominates the Nominations
Shogun is the most-awarded series in a season in Emmy history, having picked up 14 minor category wins at a standalone show last weekend. With 14 minor category wins, Shogun has already eclipsed the previous record for Emmy wins for a drama in a single season, set by Game of Thrones with 12. Its biggest rival this year was former drama winner The Crown.
This is the second Emmys this year, after two devastating blows to Hollywood last year postponed the ceremony from 2023 to January.
The show began with its father-and-son hosts poking fun at the current struggles of American broadcast television, calling the Emmys “television’s biggest night to honor movie stars on streaming services.” Eugene Levy scoffed at criticism over whether The Bear is actually a comedy, insisting, “In the true spirit of The Bear, we won’t be making any jokes.”
The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony will be telecast in India on Lionsgate Play.
